Infected Perforation

Once a perforation is established, it may be prone to infection owing to the fact that the middle ear is also involved in the infection. An infected perforation will produce a mucinous discharge from the mucin glands within the middle ear cleft.  Apart from the discharge, there may be associated granulations.

This posteroinferior perforation shows only residual signs of infection following aggressive treatment with antibiotic drops.
