Once a perforation is established, it may be prone to infection owing to the fact that the middle ear is also involved in the infection. An infected perforation will produce a mucinous discharge from the mucin glands within the middle ear cleft. Apart from the discharge, there may be associated granulations.
A very myringitic tympanic membrane with tympanosclerosis and anteroinferior perforation. Some antibiotic ointment can be seen in the ear canal.
